PRESS RELEASE: Step Forward to Save Lives: Join Black People Die By Suicide Too for The Kickback Brunch Fundraiser During September in Honor of Suicide Prevention Month

Baltimore, MD (September 3, 2024) — In recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month, Black People Die By Suicide Too (BPDBST) will host The Kickback Brunch Fundraiser: Taking Steps to Prevent Suicide in the Black Community on September 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Empanada Lady in Baltimore, MD. This event aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention, foster community connections, and support crucial mental health initiatives.

The crisis of suicide among Black youth has worsened in recent years, with Black LGBTQ youth facing an especially high risk. The prevalence of firearms further heightens this risk. A recent report from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, titled “Still Ringing the Alarm: An Enduring Call to Action for Black Youth Suicide Prevention,” underscores these concerns and calls for urgent action.

“As a suicide attempt survivor and someone who has lost a relative to suicide, I understand firsthand the unique challenges Black people face, such as racism, limited resources, and the myth that suicide is a ‘white thing’ and doesn’t happen to us,” said T-Kea Blackman, MPS, CPRS, RPS, executive director and co-founder of BPDBST. “The rapid increase in suicide rates shows that we must act now. This fundraiser will help us fulfill our mission and offer low-cost and free resources to the community.”

Attendees can look forward to a delicious brunch, exciting raffles that support our fundraising efforts, and engaging games aimed at fostering community connections. Co-sponsored by Ubuntu Healing Collective and the Mental Health Empowerment Agency, the event will also feature music by DJ Tone. Guests are encouraged to wear their best sneakers for a chance to win prizes in the sneaker contest, all while supporting BPDBST’s mission to step forward and save lives. Tickets are available on Eventbrite. Preview what’s ahead by watching our promotional video.
