At Black People Die By Suicide Too (BPDBST), we’re on a mission to break the silence around mental health and suicide in the Black community. We’re growing our team and looking for a Marketing & Communications Manager (Part-time Contractor) who’s got the creativity, strategy, and digital skills to help amplify our message. If you’re passionate about storytelling, social media, and making a real impact; this role is for you!

Who We’re Looking For:

We need a content wizard who can craft engaging social media posts, manage our website, create must-read newsletters, and help us book inspiring guests for our podcast. Someone who knows how to mix strategy with authenticity to ensure our message reaches those who need it most.

The Details

Contract Term: 12 months (renewable based on performance and funding)
Hours: 30-40 hours per month
Compensation: $14,500
Location: Remote

What You’ll Be Doing (a.k.a. Your Superpowers):

Social Media Management (40%)

  • Create, curate, and schedule engaging content for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn (2-3 posts per platform per week).
  • Maintain an authentic brand voice that aligns with BPDBST’s mission.
  • Utilize a mix of content formats (graphics, videos, text, and stories) to maximize engagement.
  • Foster community engagement by responding to comments and messages in a timely manner.
  • Dedicate at least two hours per month to engaging directly with followers (commenting, sharing, liking).
  • Track and analyze social media metrics, providing periodic reports to the Executive Director.
  • Stay on top of trending topics in mental health and Black advocacy to inform content strategy.

 

Produce Communication Materials & Website Updates (15%)

  • Keep BPDBST’s website updated with fresh content.
  • Work with the Executive Director to ensure messaging aligns with BPDBST’s mission.
  • Write and edit blog posts, press releases, impact stories, annual report, etc.
  • Ensure website content is clear, accessible, and engaging.

 

Newsletter Production (20%)

  • Plan, write, and distribute two to three email newsletters per month featuring organizational updates, events, mental health resources, and impact stories.
  • Gather and edit content from volunteers and leadership team members.
  • Design visually appealing newsletters using MailerLite.

 

Podcast Guest Assistance (15%)

  • Research and identify potential podcast guests, including mental health advocates, professionals, and individuals with lived experience.
  • Assist Special Project Coordinator in outreach and scheduling for podcast interviews. 
  • Collaborate with the Special Projects Coordinator to ensure podcast episodes align with BPDBST’s storytelling and advocacy goals.

 

Volunteer Content Review (10%)

  • Review and finalize content created by the volunteer program assistant before publication.
  • Ensure content aligns with BPDBST’s tone, mission, and high-quality standards.
  • Provide constructive feedback to volunteers to improve content effectiveness.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in marketing, communications, or digital content creation.
  • Experience working with grassroots organizations, non-profits, or mental health advocacy is a MUST.
  • As a contractor, you are required to provide your own equipment and tools necessary to perform job responsibilities (e.g. laptop, desktop, or tablet with high-speed internet access.) 

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
    Proficiency in managing social media platforms and content scheduling tools
  • Basic experience with website management (WordPress or similar platforms).
  • Familiarity with email marketing tools (e.g., MailerLite, Mailchimp, Constant Contact).
  • Familiarity with graphic design software (e.g. Canva, Adobe InDesign, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Passion for mental health advocacy, suicide prevention, and community engagement.

 

While this is a remote position, we prefer someone in the DC/MD/VA area who can attend events to provide support with content creation (when needed). Applicants outside of the area will be considered but priority will be given to DC/MD/VA applicants.
